Da Ping Huo: The Now Not-so-Hidden Hong Kong Surprise

If you’re on a lookout for a different dining scene from the traditional restaurants that you can find in Hong Kong, then one of the best choices for you is the Da Ping Huo. One of the most famous private kitchens, the place has now become an open secret among tourists and locals alike. Operated by the married couple, Wang Hai and Wong Xiaoqiong, Wang Hai takes care of the guests and decorations, while Wong Xiaoqiong manages the kitchen and the after meal entertainment.
The interiors are well decorated and quite comfy for such a small place. Aside from the food, you are also entertained with a Chinese opera, where the cook would come out in the end and show you her singing prowess. But before you get to experience all of that, you would have to go through the fire quite literally. The Da Ping Huo specializes in Szechwan, where spiciness, seasonings, and flavors are the main considerations. Be prepared for a 14-meal set of the best Szechwan dishes from Wong’s secret family recipes, as these will leave your throat quite parched and your lips stinging. The Da Ping Huo knows Szechwan, and Szechwan love its spicy food. The food here is unsurprisingly delicious; the ingredients are authentically from Szechwan.
The price is also good considering you get a full meal and some entertainment. You do need to get reservations for the place is in demand, with a lot of people craving for some Szechwan flavor. Also, allot some extra time in finding the place. It doesn’t have a traditional restaurant entrance but is surrounded by antiques stores and buildings. And so, it can easily become a treasure hunt at Hollywood Road. But all of that is worth the effort as you will be well rewarded with excellent food and a unique dining experience.
